Mathematics & Statistics
Interesting and Useful Links
The following sites offer assistance by way of exercises, quizzes, notes, demonstrations etc. to students who
may be experiencing difficulty in their units. They range in content from the banal to the intricate.
The help they offer is for specific mathematical topics rather than for any
unit in particular. It is up to the student to identify which areas they are having difficulties with, possibly in
conjunction with a tutor, and to find the appropriate level of assistance either amongst the sites listed below, or on
sites which are linked to these.
The first two sites are highly recommended for their scope and clarity, both of
explanation and access.
Maths Online
Students struggling with any aspect of their mathematics unit should visit the gallery of multimedia learning units
or try the interactive tests. These range from the simple to the more advanced and are arranged by subject.
There is a comprehensive list of mathematical tools available on the web from differentiators to elementary
statistics packages, plus links to many other Mathematics and Statistics sites of interest.
Finite Mathematics & Applied Calculus Resource Page
This site is the work of the Department of Mathematics, Hofstra University, NY. Material covered includes systems of
linear equations, matrices, functions and calculus. There is some
probability but limited statistics. There are on-line tutorials and text, quizzes and review exercises. Suitable
for MAS161 students or higher.
mathcentre
mathcentre offers students quick reference guides, practice and revision materials, video tutorials, workbooks and online practice exercises on many branches of mathematics, including: Algebra, Arithmetic, Complex Numbers, Differentiation, Finance, Functions and Graphs, Geometry, Graphs for health sciences, Guides & Case Studies, Integration, Matrices, Mechanics, Numeracy Skills, Sequences & Series, Statistics, Trigonometry and Vectors. For students at all levels.
AAA Math
If the trouble you're experiencing is at a very fundamental level, because of a gap in your basic skills, then
you may find help here. There are interactive arithmetic exercises and problems and "hundreds of pages of Basic Math
Skills". This is at a very elementary level.
Centre for Innovation in Mathematics Teaching
The pages of most help at this site are the
on-line quizzes and possibly the
help modules. Again, the
questions are at a very fundamental level, for those students who find they have a gap in their mathematical
skills.
algebra.help
For those who are having trouble pushing symbols around the page, there are interactive worksheets
available to hone your skills at handling brackets, completing squares and the like, with step-by-step explanations
of how the answers are obtained. Fundamental level.
Algebra Homework Help Center at Algebra.Com
To avoid navigating your way around this site you could go straight to its notes and exercises in
pre-algebra and elementary algebra, or for the
more advanced, try the linear algebra section,
which has matrix inversion and eigenvalue procedures.
Welcome to Zona Land... Education in Physics and Mathematics
Don't be put off by the title. This is one of the best pre- and early calculus sites of its type. Simple
explanations and java applets for polynomials and arbitrary function graphing.
Webmath
Topics available range from fractions to relativity. Solutions to problems are provided step by step.
There are also online quizzes available.
Math.com The World of Math Online
Click here to go straight to the practice problems.
The Math Forum
Puzzled by 00 and -(-1)? Then try
Dr Math's FAQ, which is probably
the best link to this site.
SOS Mathematics
This is a resource site for math review material from Algebra to Differential Equations. It assumes
a level of mathematical sophistication above the introductory. For MAS161 students and above.
Calculus on the Web (COW)
Highly structured step through exercises in Calculus and Precalculus.
UBC Calculus Online Homepage
An excellent vignette of a site, with notes, interactive graphs and online quizzes (that are
graded). MAS161 and above.
ecalculus.org: THE CALCULUS PAGE
Calculus problems with the most detailed, step-by-step solutions available anywhere on the internet (as far as they
know.) Some degree of mathematical sophistication is required to attempt the problems. For MAS161 and above.
The MathServ Calculus Toolkit
Mathematica based differentiator, factoriser, function drawer, Newton's method, polynomial
factoriser, etc, etc. This is a handy collection of tools for the mathematically literate.
